For too long there has been a dangerous assumption that progress toward universal schooling is inexorable. In fact, it has stalled, and is even falling back in Africa. The UN’s Special Envoy for Global Education says we must reverse that trend, and ensure everyone can enjoy the golden opportunity that not only changes individual lives, but transforms the prospects of nations. The year 2012 saw the biggest single initiative yet by one person and one foundation to ensure the education of every single child around the world. Thanks to Her Highness Sheikha Moza bint Nasser, Chairperson of Qatar Foundation, Educate a Child will help millions of children in the poorest corners of the globe go to school. Educate a Child will work with innovative programs such as the BRAC boat schools in Bangladesh, which provide education on ships for the hardest to reach children.
